Finishing Trends for 2024: Refinement and Precision

Every designer knows that a product’s CMF (colors, materials, and finishes) can be what separates meticulously crafted products from run-of-the-mill designs. They are critical elements that have a major impact on product differentiation and buying decisions. There are multiple finish trends emerging that are expected to peak in 2024. We’re focusing on two to start. Refinement and Precision both exude a luxurious elegance which separates them from other 2024 finishing trends. The classic and timeless sophistication of these two trends make them worthy of a deeper dive.

Refinement is described as the combination of ultra-fine satin metallic finishes, refined patterns and textures with smooth polished accents. Picture the contrast between a satin rose gold against a polished rose gold within the same product design. The result is a stunning, high-quality luxurious aesthetic. Or how about a dark gun metal satin metallic finish detailed with a fine pinstripe pattern to highlight a special product feature? All of that sounds fabulous, but how do you implement it? Combine different levels of fine and ultra-fine bead-blasted textures to achieve subtle texture contrasts. Incorporate patterns like diamond milling or pinstripes with elegant curves for added appeal.

Precision is described as solid metals that are precisely machined and then finished with fine bead blasting or laser etching. Similar to Refinement, Precision boasts eye-catching but subtle same-surface textural changes achieved by precision processing. How can you implement this trend into your next product design? Use fine bead-blasted textures to refine the surfaces of machined, etched, or engraved patterns. This not only supplies visual contrast, but it also helps to hide any machine or processing marks that are left behind by the manufacturing process.

At LaFrance, we have many processes within multiple product lines that can help you bring Refinement and Precision to life. Sand-blasted textures are achievable in our electroform and zinc product lines. Etching, to achieve those subtle same-surface aesthetics, can be done within our electroform, stainless steel, and zinc product lines. Selective brushing, possible in our aluminum product line, also creates the subtle contrast seen between matte and polish. Combined with our plating, PVD, anodizing, and metallic painting processes, these metals and their finishing processes are the ideal solution to bring Refinement and Precision from concept to production.

These trends have already started to pop up in consumer electronics like gaming, smart devices, TV and home theatre, small appliances, computers and tablets, tech accessories, in-car accessories, handheld devices, autonomous vehicles, personal robots, health and wellness, and personal care. Memorable finishes can convey a sense of quality and even express the personality of a product. Are you ready to create unforgettable aesthetics with your next product design?
