The Complete Beginner's Guide to Designing for On-Product Branding

We know the idea of designing a name plate, logo, emblem, medallion, or branding can seem daunting to some, especially if you have little experience.

That’s why we’ve listed the 6 key areas to focus on when creating your branding. These aren’t the only things to take into consideration, but we think they are the most important, especially at the start.

1)  Shape
The shape you choose for your logo is typically dictated by the shape, size, and curves of your end products’ housing. Does a domed circle make sense to help your name stand out? Should the part footprint follow the outline of the copy and “hug it” closely when you don’t have a ton of real estate to work with on the housing? Our experience with such a diverse group of industries makes us perfect to consult during your design phase.

2)  Size
Your branding should be sized appropriately and proportionately within the footprint of the product design. Your brand name is who you are. It needs to be visible! Think of it as what we like to call “The Goldilocks Rule” – not too big, not too small, but just right. From working with such a diverse industry base, we have experience in all sizes. We can recommend small logo sizes for eyewear down to detailed millimeters on the frames, while also confidently suggesting larger name plates best fit for an oil tanker.

3)  Font
This one is actually pretty simple. The font should be legible and visible from a distance (within reason). The last thing you want is people squinting to read your name, right? Often the simplest of fonts have the biggest impact. They clearly state your name but don’t compete with other design elements you might have within your branding design. Some designs call for a texture or pattern in the background. When you use a simple font, you can create some really eye-catching design elements in the background which oftentimes results in a pretty memorable piece.

4)  Color
The best way to pick color is to start your design in black and white. The logo design itself should come before any color is established. This helps you see more easily whether your design looks good or needs some tweaks. Once the design is established, then you can play with color. Remember though, color has meaning. Do you want to evoke a sense of peace and calm? Then maybe blues and greens are the right choice. Or maybe your brand is one of luxury. If that’s the case, then deep rich tones of chocolates, golds, and blacks might be best. The point is, know what your brand stands for. What message are you trying to impart? As long as you have a clear vision of that, the color choice you make will be right for you.

5)  Position
Where your name plate is placed on your product can have a HUGE influence on purchase decisions. Think about retail. Let’s say all the vacuum cleaners were on the top shelf – does a logo on the handle make sense if no one can see it on display? On the other hand, a name plate on a handle could be a great idea since the consumer would touch your brand name every time they use the product. Remember, you can have more than one logo on your product. You can also use decorative trim and accent pieces to make a deeper connection with your consumers. The position of all these things depends on the overall size of your product, how it is displayed in a retail space (if applicable), and how your consumers interact with it.

6)  Material
There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to on-product branding. Material selection depends on many factors like size, weight, finishing, durability requirements, and many more. The important thing here is to think about materials EARLY in the product design phase. We’ve heard time and time again things like, “I forgot about the logo and the whole product is already designed.” “I can’t have metal over this area because it could interfere with the electronics.” “I think I have to print my name.” That type of thinking can have negative impacts on your brand perception in the marketplace. Your branding needs to look as good as your product and last for its lifetime. Selecting the right materials to convey your brand’s message is key and LaFrance is equipped to help with recommendations. We have experience creating pieces that can fit seamlessly into your product design. Our wide product offering also boasts non-conductive options should you need to utilize non-metal branding.

Remember that your name plate is an integral part of your product design and not an afterthought. No detail is too small and nuances are key. After all, it’s the details that define you!
